The following was posted on WWE.com
It is with great sadness that I announce my resignation from the WWE effective January 1, 2010.
I have never even considered a future outside the walls of the WWE. However, sometimes life takes an unexpected turn and while it is the most difficult decision I have ever made, it is time for me to move on.
First and foremost, I would like to thank my father for the incredible education working with him has provided and for giving me the opportunity to play a role in building WWE into the global phenomenon that it is today. I am extremely proud to have been the 4th generation in this business, and I am grateful for everyday I was able to work along side not only my own, but the entire WWE family.
Thank you to all of the WWE Superstars both past and present for your passion, pride and dedication. You are truly the engine of the organization and it has been a pleasure to work with, learn from and get to know all of you. Thank you for the privilege of sharing the stage with you and for allowing me to become but a momentary member of your elite brotherhood . I have so much appreciation for the many sacrifices you endure, both physically and personally, to make this business the success that it is. The respect I have for each of you is immeasurable.
Finally, there are no words to express my gratitude to WWE fans the world over for supporting this company through good times and bad and for your unbridled passion that fuels the Superstars’ performances. I am profoundly grateful to have been able to entertain you both in front of the camera and from behind the scenes. You are the greatest fans in the world.
I will always love this business and will remain a fan forever.
Shane
As a fan of Shane's I'm truly saddened by this I will miss his in frequent appearances on RAW. This is truly a sad day for us Shane McMahon fans.

Agree, I was in shock when I read it early this morning. But he was to do what's right for him and his family. I just hope he makes one final appearace on TV before leaving to say goodbye.
Shane, we will all miss you very much.

I'm like... so upset over this. Literally upset, and sick. Something really drastic must've happened to make him do this, because there was no warning. It was like he just said fuck it, and up and did it (though I know that's not the case) I'm still in shock over this, but here's some of the reasons I thought of: Shane finally realized that he's no longer the heir apparent of the company and with Stephanie and Triple H taking over, even now, there's really no place for him. I'm sure he enjoys the whole global media thing, but it's probably not what he thought he'd be doing. I wouldn't be surprised if there's some announcement regarding Stephanie and Triple H's position in the company after Shane resigns. There was also the issue of Stephanie and her crew suddenly taking over WWE.com, which we all know was/is Shane's baby, and then Stephanie going on her firing rampages, etc. Ever since that happened, I kinda had a feeling that there might've been some really high tensions between everyone business wise after that. Then there's the possibility of something being wrong with him, Marissa or the kids, which I hope to god isn't the case. Someone also said Shane might've resigned to help Linda out with her senate run, but I don't see him doing that, especially since she doesn't really have a chance of winning. Also, and this is leaning toward his possible unhappiness with his position in the company, but Shane is a big MMA/boxing fan... maybe he's leaving to do something MMA/boxing related. I don't see him fighting of course, but who knows... maybe he'll start his own promotion. God, wouldn't that be great if he started his own wrestling or MMA promotion? THE POSSIBLITIES, PEOPLE! It just seems so weird that he just up and resigned, something I never thought would happen, especially with Linda gone now also. Stephanie and Triple H are probably secretely loving all of this. I could just see them saying "MWHAHAHAHA! Now there's no one to threaten our throne!"

aww man this sucks now im going to be bummed out throughout my work shift . I hope he makes one last tv appearance, im betting on him being a guest host on RAW, that would be a nice send off for him. I've heard a lot of people on another board talking about what he might do when he leaves the company, one being as sara has mentioned the whole MMA thing. I think its possible that he may start up his own company, possibly wrestling with MMA interlinked with it. He apparently isn't too great on the creative side so here's a solution: HIRE Paul Heyman, he is a creative genuis, much more than what vince claims to be. Hopefully it isn't because there's nothing wrong with him, marissa or their kids but hopefully we might get some answers on this later but i think it's just to persue other interests. Apologies for the rambling but im really upset

My thought is to why he is leaving is that maybe he is joining his wife Marissa in her film production company, Kamala Films. That way he can spend more time with the kids while their getting older and going to school and still be in the entertainment business.
I'm still in shock! My jaw dropped this morning when I read that. But thinking about it, it really doesn't surprise me all that much. He is at the point in his life where he wants change. He probably see's that the WWE isn't going anywhere anytime soon and wants to be more of a family man.

I am sadden by this but I can see that maybe shane felt like either helping his mother with support or wanting to spend more time with his children and wife.Because he has said many times in interviews how hard it is for him to have to be away from them so much.

could be but at this point everything is a possibility. what sucks the most is that it will be a real life hhh & stephanie takeover and no offence to them or anyone whos a fan of theirs but it doesn't sound like a good thing to me. whatever he does after he leaves the company hopefully we'll get to find out what it is he's doing

At least I won't have to force myself to sit through two hours of utter crap (RAW) after he leaves. The only reason why I watch it is in case he shows up.
